Staff members at FDA and USP frequently acknowledge each other's contributions towards promoting public health and recognize the importance of maintaining their strong collaborative relationship. Both organizations value the unique governmental and private partnership that allows them to serve the needs of the public more effectively. Since 1940 it has been a tradition for leaders at the FDA to speak at the United States Pharmacopeia Convention about how efforts of USP and its volunteers help support FDA's mission. In the following video, FDA Commissioner Margaret Hamburg discusses the history of FDA/USP cooperation and how this relationship will continue to benefit both organizations in the future.
Likewise, On June 25, 2006 USP commemorated FDA's 100th anniversary by hosting an event to recognize current and former FDA employees who have served as USP volunteers. Joseph G. Valentino and other speakers reflected on the history of the productive USP-FDA relationship. Roger L. Williams presented certificates to the many current and former FDA employees present at the event and congratulated them on being "pioneers in consumer protection," and "leaders in the science of public health." He thanked volunteers for their support, and emphasized continuing a strong USP-FDA partnership in the future.
