Roger L. Williams, M.D., is Chief Executive Officer of the United States Pharmacopeial Convention (USP). He provides strategic leadership for USP at the direction of its Board of Trustees. Dr. Williams also serves as Chair of the Council of Experts, USP's scientific standards-setting body, which continuously revises the United States Pharmacopeia, National Formulary and the Food Chemicals Codex. Dr. Williams leads USP's outreach efforts to many national and international bodies who share USP's public health mission.
Dr. Williams was trained at Oberlin College and at the University of Chicago's School of Medicine. He served in the United States Army first in Korea and then at Walter Reed Army Institute of Research, where he conducted anti-malarial drug research. Prior to coming to USP, Dr. Williams worked in academia and at FDA Center for Drug Evaluation and Research from 1990-2000 in various leadership roles.
He is a board certified internist and clinical pharmacologist and is a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Alpha Omega Alpha. He received the U.S. Army Award of Merit from the U.S. Army and many awards while at FDA. He is a fellow of the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists, a former expert member of the International Pharmacy Federation Board of Pharmaceutical Sciences, and has represented USP at the World Health Organization. He has authored or co-authored over 200 publications on many topics, focusing on applied regulatory and compendial science.
