2017 Volunteer Award Winners

USP expert volunteers direct our work to improve global public health through public standards and related programs that help to ensure medicines and foods quality.  A volunteer selection committee issues annual recognition to expert volunteers whose contributions exemplify our mission.

The USP Jacob Bigelow Award

Charles G. Thiel received the inaugural USP Jacob Bigelow Award in recognition of his dedication and exemplary leadership to the former Aerosols Expert Committee. Mr. Thiel was selected for his extraordinary contributions to the work of the former Aerosols Expert Committee and his depth of knowledge, which was the foundation for the Expert Committee’s activities for more than 20 years. He also was recognized for his contributions to the USP Advisory Panel on Aerosols, working on standards for a number of innovative and widely-used devices that increased the ease and precision of particle measurement and improved inhaled drug delivery to patients. “Mr. Thiel is uniquely deserving of this first-ever individual award for his commitment to USP’s standards-setting process, his passion for quality, innovation, and his outstanding contributions to global public health,” said Jaap Venema, Ph.D., Chief Science Officer and Chair, Council of Experts.

The USP Jacob Bigelow Award acknowledges the outstanding contribution by an individual volunteer. It is presented in recognition of exceptional dedication and important contributions to the achievement of USP standards-setting and impact or improvement of USP’s standards-setting processes

The USP Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Standards

The Review of Surveillance and Screening Technologies for the Quality Assurance of Medicines Expert Panel, responsible for evaluating portable screening technologies, received the 2017 USP Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Standards. Andy Stergachis, Ph.D., Chair of the Expert Panel, accepted the award on behalf of its members, from Jaap Venema, Ph.D., Chief Science Officer and Chair, Council of Experts.

The Expert Panel’s work helps ensure the quality, safety, and benefit of medicines around the world as portable screening technologies are an increasingly valuable tool in combating the growing global problem of substandard and falsified medicines.

The Expert Panel was recognized for publishing much-needed information on the capabilities of existing and emerging screening technologies and developing resources that help standardize how these technologies are evaluated. These contributions reflect high levels of collaboration and efficiency, and a forward-looking approach to USP’s standards-setting priorities.

This award honors the contributions of the Expert Panel, which exemplifies the spirit of voluntarism that defines USP’s commitment to address public health challenges. USP will send certificates to all members and Government Liaisons of the Expert Panel. The award winners are:

The USP Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Standards recognizes the remarkable contributions of our volunteer bodies that work to improve global health through public standards and related programs that help ensure the quality, safety, and benefit of medicines and foods. Candidacy for this award is open to all volunteer bodies operating anywhere in the world that are affiliated with USP.
