Course Description:Medical products control laboratories play a vital role in the quality control/assessment of pharmaceuticals, biological products and medical devices. However, laboratories have a variety of safety and health hazards. This makes the management of safety and health related issues in the laboratory an essential part of an effective quality management system. These hazards could be physical or chemical hazards and it includes fire, explosion, and reactivity with other substances. Hazards become realities when a chemical is used or stored improperly, exposing it to circumstances that could cause it to burn or explode.
This course helps laboratory staff understand the hazards associated with laboratory processes, what precautions can protect themselves and co-workers, and how to act effectively in an emergency.
Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:
- Identify waste and their types
- Identify safe work practices related to their functions
- Identify relevant international standard requirements associated with laboratory operations (such as WHO guidance, OSHA General Duty Clause, 29 CFR 1910.132, 1910.133, 1910.1030, 1910.1200, etc.)
- Understand ways to increase and enhance safety awareness in the laboratory
- Identify employer, management and employee responsibilities in safety management
- Understand the importance of SDS, CHP and hazard communication in laboratory operations
