The global pandemic has resulted in populations all over the world taking a more active role in maintaining their well-being, leading to significantly increased demand and production of dietary supplements and ingredients. Rising usage, supply chain issues and widely varying regulatory oversight among countries where dietary supplements and ingredients are produced have all contributed to concerns about the quality of these very popular products, particularly on potential impurities and contaminants.
The United States Pharmacopeia (USP) held an Open Forum on Impurities and Contaminants in Dietary Ingredients and Dietary Supplements to provide input on a planned USP informational General Chapter on this topic. The event introduced USP’s approach to drafting the chapter and provide opportunities for stakeholders to identify concerns and provide input prior to publication of the General Chapter in the Pharmacopeial Forum (PF) for public comment.
The interactive Open Forum was held virtually on Thursday, April 21, from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time.
Topics covered
- Background and scope of the chapter
- Brief description of various types and sources of impurities and contaminants
- Analytical methods and challenges
- Approaches to setting acceptance criteria
- Risk assessment considerations
