Virtual Workshop Format

In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, USP has decided to modify our approach to the workshop and will not hold an in-person meeting in September, opting to hold a virtual meeting instead. We made this decision to both protect the health of our attendees, USP staff and speakers, and because we believe that we are obligated - as a mission-driven public health organization - to take steps to help slow the spread of this pandemic by fostering social distancing.

Event Time Zone: U.S. Eastern Daylight Time (EDT) - Washington, DC

Overview

Osmolarity, osmolality, and tonicity have closely related but distinct definitions.  However, they all suffer from the same affliction—their perceived simplicity frequently yields to underappreciation and lack of detailed understanding of:

  • Intricacies in their measurement;
  • Their impact in formulation and product design for human and animal use through multiple routes of administration; and
  • Their use as control strategies during manufacturing processes.

This workshop will explore and share the latest developments in the measurement, control, and application of osmolarity/osmolality and tonicity in the design, production, and quality control of modern pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical products.

Topics to be covered include:

  • Instrumental techniques used to measure osmolality and tonicity, their pros and cons, calibration procedures
  • Considerations for formulation development
  • Manufacturing processes for biologics
