Facilitating technology transfer

Technology transfer helps manufacturers expand pharmaceutical production by bridging gaps in knowledge – whether around process, capabilities, or equipment – to elevate and optimize the quality and output of medical products. We specialize in assessing the potential for and facilitating technology transfers between innovators and recipients while de-risking the process for all parties.

Technology transfer can expand use of innovative manufacturing practices to support a more reliable supply of essential medical products. However, manufacturers in many countries often don’t have the infrastructure, technical capacity, or resources to support the research and development functions that foster advances in manufacturing.

Improving access to COVID-19 treatment through technology transfer

When remdesivir, an antiviral medicine, emerged in 2021 as a treatment option for COVID-19, our program, Promoting the Quality of Medicines Plus (PQM+), funded by USAID and led by USP, worked to facilitate technology transfer to one of Pakistan’s largest pharmaceutical manufacturing companies. We helped build key capabilities within Pakistan, which enabled the manufacturer to scale-up production according to international best practices, and worked together to develop a plan to export the product to more than 15 countries.
