Will lead scientific nonprofit's strategic marketing operations for chemical medicines reference standards, used around the world to ensure quality in pharmaceutical development and manufacturing
Rockville, Md., June 24, 2019 - USP announced today that Michael Purcell, an executive with extensive experience in pharmaceutical operations and strategy, joined the organization this month as vice president, chemical medicines. Purcell brings extensive experience in operations and strategy related to pharmaceuticals and healthcare technology.
Purcell will lead USP's strategic marketing and program operations for chemical medicines reference standards around the world. "I look forward to being a part of USP's work providing robust tools that help pharmaceutical manufacturers around the world produce quality medicines," said Purcell.
USP quality standards, which are used in more the 140 countries, help manufacturers increase predictability and reliability, preserving the integrity of the global supply chain. "Safeguarding the quality of medication is fundamental to protecting the public's health, especially as ingredients and products come from all over the world," said Salah Kivlighn, Ph.D., senior vice president, global strategic marketing and program operations. "Michael Purcell's vast experience with strategy and corporate development will help USP build on our leadership in this area to make an even larger impact in medicines quality and health worldwide."
Before joining USP, Purcell was the vice president of strategy and corporate development with J M Smith Corporation in Spartanburg, S.C., where he led the development and execution of strategic plans and growth initiatives for South Carolina's third largest privately held corporation. His previous experience includes owning a consulting practice, as well as working for a number of organizations in management positions, including Danaher Corporation, General Electric, Milliken & Company, and DuPont.
Purcell earned a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering from Purdue University and an MBA in finance and strategic management from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business.
