USP quality standards for medicines and food ingredients available free to AACP member institutions

Chicago, IL—Through a new partnership with the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP), the U.S. Pharmacopeia (USP) is providing free student access to the quality standards in its compendia for medicines, dietary supplements and food ingredients.

The new program, USP Academic Connection, offers AACP institutional members complimentary access to USP publications, discounts on educational programming, and other benefits to support the education of students in the health sciences. The partnership was announced at AACP's 2019 Pharmacy Education annual meeting, held July 13-17 in Chicago.

USP publishes quality standards for medicines and dietary supplements in the  United States Pharmacopeia–National Formulary (USP–NF) and quality standards for food ingredients in the Foods Chemicals Codex (FCC). Access to the monographs in the USP–NF and the FCC can help guide pharmacy education and help health science students, including student pharmacists, better understand quality standards for medicines and supplements, compounded preparations, inactive ingredients, packaging and storage, and package inserts.

"We're delighted to make our quality standards available to health sciences faculty and students across academia through AACP member schools. Our nearly 200 years of accumulated knowledge represented through our public quality standards will enable this program to strengthen curriculums and better prepare students for their role as health science practitioners," said Ronald T. Piervincenzi, PhD, USP CEO.

The new partnership provides a valuable resource to students and faculty at AACP member institutions, according to Lucinda Maine, Ph.D., R.Ph., AACP executive vice president and CEO. "The USP Academic Connection, with free access to the online USP–NF and FCC standards, fits well within AACP's efforts to explore the role of pharmacy and pharmacy education in today’s challenging healthcare landscape," said Maine.

In addition to access to these publications, USP is offering a special discount to AACP members for selected USP Education courses and programs. More information is available on these learning opportunities, visit USP Academic Connection.
