Skim Milk Powder FCC Analytical Materials

About Skim Milk Powder and Nonfat Dry Milk

Skim Milk Powder and Nonfat Dry Milk are powdered dairy products obtained by removal of water from skim milk. Both skim milk powder and nonfat dry milk are almost identical in nutritional content. One key difference is that skim milk powder must contain at least 34% milk protein, while nonfat dry milk does not have a standardized protein level. These ingredients have wide applications in food applications including those for infants and the elderly. Milk powders have historically been shown to be susceptible to economically motivated adulteration; wide use of these ingredients in food products increases the potential risk to public health of adulteration. The 2008 melamine incident in China and subsequent adulteration reports serve as stark reminders of the susceptibility of milk powders to adulteration and the importance of taking proactive measures to ensure the authenticity and quality of food ingredients.

Analytical methods and materials are of critical importance to verification of the identity, quality, purity of skim milk powder/nonfat dry milk ingredients on the market.

The Food Chemicals Codex (FCC)  offers eight skim milk powder materials with known levels of contaminants or economically motivated adulterants. These materials can be used to help verify the identity and quality of skim milk powder/nonfat dry milk through targeted and non-targeted analytical approaches (Appendix XVI & XVIII of FCC 13).
