Manufacturing HIV/AIDS commodities in Africa

While pharmaceutical manufacturing in low- and middle-income countries varies significantly by region and product, the African continent currently relies heavily on imports of HIV/AIDS diagnostics and therapeutics from foreign producers.

“If the continent can produce ARVs, it will be part of sustaining our response so that everyone living with HIV/AIDS has access to lifesaving drugs. " - Ambassador Dr. John Nkengasong, U.S. Global AIDS Coordinator and Special Representative for Global Health Diplomacy (OGAC)

Building capacity of African-based manufacturers to produce HIV/AIDS commodities, including rapid diagnostic tests and antiretrovirals (ARVs), is one way to expand local and regional production, improve supply chain resiliency, and strengthen health security.

To better understand the current manufacturing landscape, local demand, and market for HIV/AIDS commodities, we conducted a landscape analysis to identify African producers, estimate both current and future capacity, flag key barriers to expansion, and make recommendations to support diversified production.
